Sounds like Hollywood’s latest comeback kid Stephen Dorff is planning to stick around long after his starring role in Sofia Coppola‘s “Somewhere” hits theaters later this year.
Speaking to The Independent, the actor has revealed that he is currently in the process of writing and developing a comedy script through Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions, which he hopes will be a starring vehicle for himself and a little known actor friend by the name of Jack Nicholson.
“I like to make movies about characters. I like smaller films, that’s what I love to do,” Dorff revealed. “I love acting, number one, but I think now I’ll get more into producing and make some more films, à la “Felon” [a prison film which Dorff executive produced and starred in], maybe even a little bigger. I have a comedy idea that I came up with that I’m doing with Adam Sandler’s company that I want to do with Jack Nicholson, who’s still a good friend of mine.”
Dorff and Nicholson starred together in Bob Rafelson‘s 1996 noir-thriller “Blood & Wine” alongside Michael Caine, Jennifer Lopez and Judy Davis which was on the heels of Dorff’s turn as the renowned fifth Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe in Iain Softley‘s “Backbeat.” One assumes Dorff has (hopefully) spoken to Nicholson about the project before talking it up in the press, though his collaboration with Happy Madison should come as no surprise considering his upcoming role in the Sandler-penned and produced porn-industry comedy “Born To Be A Star” with Nick Swardson, Christina Ricci and Don Johnson.
So what’s this screenplay that Dorff is working on? “It’s a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France. We’re not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and [the idea has] already [been] bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I’ll turn that into a script and I’ll go and tell Jack,” Dorff noted, before apparently impressing the reporter with an impersonation of Nicholson replying “Dorff, come on, let’s do it.”
“And I’ll get Sony to give him his $15m and then we’ll go and make the movie – because he likes money. Just the way I like money too.” He’s joking but we doubt he’s lying. And it’s not just the life of luxury he could get used to, adding that “after working with Sofia, I’m having a hard time finding anything that is remotely as good. Working with Sofia was kind of like the kiss of death. I told Sofia, ‘I hope we get to do another one because it’s very hard to find another one now after I’ve worked with you because it was such an amazing experience.'”
Dorff also has a role in Tarsem‘s Greek-mythology epic “Immortals” due to hit theaters on November 11th next year and, as we mentioned, will be starring in Coppola’s Golden Lion-winner “Somewhere” due out December 22nd.
