Exploring The Duality Of Storytelling In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

So everyone has seen “Avengers: Infinity War” by now, right? No? You’re not alone. I won’t spoil anything for you. I’m still living under a rock, avoiding most things on the internet until I see the film. What I do know, and what the greater population does as well, is that “Infinity War” is huge. Not just a massive film in budget and star power, but it literally has altered the Marvel Universe as we know it. (I think. Again, haven’t seen the film.)

Since “Iron Man” first hit theaters in 2008, the MCU has grown and taken over practically every screen. Television shows and movies are colliding in the same world. Now, to be clear, Marvel Studios and Marvel TV are two very different entities. Technically they don’t operate alongside one another. But most Marvel devotees would note that the TV shows tend to reference the events in the films. This, in turn, leads characters to make decisions, impacts further storylines, and changes the rules of the game. We’ve seen this a lot, particularly in “Jessica Jones.” With events taking place following the battle in New York City in “The Avengers,” the Netflix show takes a dark turn. People don’t trust these so-called heroes, and for good reason.

Beyond this small instance in a literal galaxy full of storylines, Marvel has stimulated a duality of storytelling. There are multiple points of view in one film. Eventually, all of these POVs connect. But it’s when the veil is lifted that we, the audience, are just as gobsmacked as the characters. In this video essay from HoustonProductions1, the duality narrative in Marvel is analyzed. Now, you could go on for days about all the interconnecting stories and how one character’s goodwill could mean catastrophe for another. But considering the video essay came out prior to “Infinity War” and “Black Panther,” we come out of it with a deeper knowledge and awareness.
