In this golden age of television, we’ve had some pretty incredible actors grace the small screen. Just look at “Big Little Lies,” for example. With a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, and Zoë Kravitz, a show like this never would have been possible 20 years ago. Not when actors back then would never stoop so low as to appear on a TV show. But if you want further proof that we are truly in the era of TV trumping movies, look no further than Meryl Streep.
“Big Little Lies” went and snagged Meryl Streep for a role in season 2. Meryl. Fucking. Streep. This legendary actress has basically won every acting award around, been in countless classic films, and is a regular fixture at the top of “Who do you admire most?” lists by other actors. 20 years ago, she would have scoffed at the idea of starring in a TV show, even if it was on HBO. Now, she’s lining up to be part of a show that is probably better acted than most of the major films being released.
Just recently, Nicole Kidman released the first look at Streep on the set of “Big Little Lies” season 2, and while she looks just as you might imagine (with a tad darker hair), this picture just serves as proof that she actually will be on the show. In the series, Streep plays the role of Mary Louise Wright, the mother to Skarsgård’s character. And that’s about all we know at this point.
But for fans of “Big Little Lies” and Meryl Streep, in general, that’s all that matters. Consider this your “proof of life” picture released by Kidman proving that all this Streep talk is, in fact, real and happening. All we have to do now is just wait for HBO to get this series in front of our eyeballs later this year.
