Studios Will Preview 2021 Movie Titles At Big Screen Is Back Event

Movie theaters are slowly awakening from their pandemic-induced slumber. Just last month, “Godzilla vs. Kong” opened to $31 million in 3,000 reduced capacity theaters and has grossed $93 million so far while it was also available on HBO Max for the entire month of April. The no. 1 market in the nation, Southern California, will be entirely at 50% capacity by next week and at 100% capacity by June 15. New York City plans on reopening theaters to full capacity on July 1. And Hollywood has responded.

The summer of 2021 now finds major tentpoles on the release calendar such as “Black Widow” (July 9), “Space Jam: A New Legacy” (July 16), and “The Suidice Squad” (August 6). In order to help give moviegoing a boost, NATO (National Association of Theater Owners), the MPA (Motion Picture Association), and a “small group of entertainment industry figures” began the “Big Screen is Back” campaign with a TV spot that played during the Academy Awards telecast. Now, the coalition is holding what we’d describe as a mini-CinemaCon for the press on Wednesday, May 19th in Los Angeles.

Representatives from 10 different studios will preview their upcoming releases and talent from some of the films is expected to be on hand.  The event promises “never-before-seen footage, moderated Q&As, or conversations with filmmakers, all with a collaborative underlying message of support for the movie-going experience.” No individual talent has been confirmed at this time.

In a statement, The Big Screen Is Back organizing committee collectively noted, “After a year-and-a-half of theater closures, restrictions, consumer confusion, and moving slates, this event is meant to be a joyful celebration of the industry that we all love – one that includes entertainment press gathering together to celebrate the re-opening of theaters nationwide this summer. There is a lot to be excited about and much for audiences to look forward to this summer.”
