It’s been a rough eight months for the Directors Guild of America, but the union that said let’s make a deal before its peers have weathered the storm, and hope springs eternal as we begin 2024. Well, perhaps that was before their DGA Awards nominees for Movies for Television and Limited Series were announced. We’ll get to that in a minute, but the bigger news is that for the DGA’s television nominations, announced this morning, “Succession” dominated all programs with four nominations in the Drama category. “The Bear” and “Ted Lasso” all earned two nominations each in Comedy.

While some may quibble with “Succession” landing four out of the five nominations in the Drama field, “The Last of Us” took the fifth, that’s a far cry from the head-scratching embarrassment in the Limited Series category. That category saw Shawn Levy‘s work for “All The Light We Cannot See,” which has a 36, yes, a 36 on Metacritic make the cut as well as three, yes, three nominations for “Lessons in Chemistry.” Acclaimed directorial efforts for “Beef,” “Dead Ringers,” “Fellow Travelers,” “The Curse,” “Murder at the End of the World,“ and “Justified: City Primeval,” among others, were snubbed.
On the other side of the spectrum, there was a bright light as “Kokomo City’s” D. Smith earned their first DGA nomination in the Documentary category.
The DGA will announce the film nominees tomorrow, January 10. The DGA Awards will be handed out on February 10.
