Summer 2023 Movie Preview: 52 Must-See Films To Watch

“Passages”
Written and directed by Ira Sachs, “Passages” tells the story of a gay couple’s marriage that is thrown into crisis when one of them beings a passionate affair with a younger woman. Franz Rogowski and Ben Whishaw star alongside Adele Exarchopoulos.
Release Date: August 4 via MUBI. 

“Dreamin’ Wild”
Based on the true story of the musical duo Donnie and Joe Emerson, who spent all they had to produce a record that went largely unnoticed until it was rediscovered decades later. Now, Donnie is forced to confront the ghosts from his past and grapple with the toll his dreams took on his family. The film stars Chris Messina, Zooey Deschanel, Casey Affleck, Noah Jupe, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Walton Goggins
Release Date: August 4 via Roadside Attractions. 

“Gran Turismo”
The “Gran Turismo” video game series doesn’t feature any characters or an overarching storyline; it’s pure driving and racing. But that isn’t much of a film plot, so Zach Baylin, Will Dunn, and Jason Hall combine the video game and the true story of Jann Mardenborough’s life, from participating in the online trials for the Gran Turismo Academy to becoming a professional race car driver. The film stars David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Archie Madekwe

“Heart of Stone”
From Tom Harper “Heart of Stone” is a spy action thriller about Rachel Stone, a CIA agent who is the only woman standing between her powerful employer and the loss of its most valuable asset. Rachel Stone is played by Gal Gadot, who stars alongside Jamie Dornan, Sophie Okonedo, and Matthias Schweighöfer. 
Release Date: August 11 on Netflix. 

“The Eternal Memory”
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the hardest things to watch a loved one face. Augusto and Paulina have been together for 25 years, but eight years ago, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and Paulina has become his caretaker. Day in and day out, the couple faces the disease head-on adapting to the disruptions it brings by relying on their affection and their shared sense of humor. This documentary was directed by Maite Alberdi. Originally released at Sundance in January.
Release Date: August 11 via MTV Documentary Films and Dogwood.

“Last Voyage of the Demeter”
The plot of this film is based on a single chapter from “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” about the Russian ship Demeter, which was carrying private cargo from Carpathia to London. The film will cover the strange events that the crew experienced during the transport as they try to survive the voyage. The film stars Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian and is directed by André Øvredal
Release Date: August 11 via Universal. 

“Blue Beetle”
The next film in line from DC Studios follows Jaime Reyes, a college graduate who gains superpowers when he acquires a magical item that grants him an exoskeleton armor turning him into a superhero. Jaime is played by “Cobra Kai” star Xolo Maridueña, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillén, and George Lopez. The film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto.
Release Date: August 18 via Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios.

“They Listen”
Chris Weitz’s next film is a horror film starring John Cho, Katherine Waterston, and Lukita Maxwell. However,  we don’t know anything about the plot of the film as the details are kept secret.

“The Equalizer 3”
Robert McCall has struggled to reconcile the things he’s done since giving up his life as a government assassin. When he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses, he has to become his friends’ protector and take on the mafia. Denzel Washinton reprises his role as Robert McCall alongside Dakota Fanning and David Denman. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua.
Release Date: September 1 via Sony.

“Problemista”
Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer struggling to make his ideas a reality. As his time on his US work visa draws to a close, a job assisting an art-world outcast becomes available and may be his only hope of staying in the country. The film highlights the treacherous worlds of both New York City and the US Immigration System. “Problemista” stars Julio Torres, who wrote and directed the film, as well as Tilda Swinton, RZA, and Isabella Rossellini. The film premiered at SXSW this past March.

Bottoms
You know the name Emma Seligman (or should) because she wrote and directed her fabulous debut, “Shiva Baby,” which put her and lead actress Rachel Sennott on the map. The two of them reunite right away for “Bottoms,” a movie they co-wrote together. Co-starring Ayo Edebiri, Dagmara Dominczyk, Nicholas Galitzine, Kaia Gerber, Ruby Cruz, and Havana Rose Liu, the film centers on two unpopular queer high school students who start a fight club to have sex before graduation.
