To say that László Nemes’ first film “Son of Saul” is critically-acclaimed is a gross understatement. The 2015 film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, where it took home the Grand Prix. After that, the film went on to win the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Not a bad way to start your filmmaking career, at all. Now, Nemes is back with his follow-up film, “Sunset,” which is performing fall film festival double duty, at both Venice and Toronto, and we have the first look at it.
The teaser for the film is quite simple. You see the setting of Budapest 1913, and then music is playing as a crowd of people dance. The music, the costumes, everything is beautifully done and shows that Nemes probably won’t suffer a sophomore slump with “Sunset.” And at the very end of the footage, you are introduced, briefly, to the protagonist of the film, the young Írisz Leiter, played by newcomer Juli Jakab.

Again, there’s not much else to say about the teaser, as it does just that — tease. However, as we get closer to the big fall festivals, its great to remember that not all of the films need to have high-profile actors, big directors, or tons of hype. There are also plenty of filmmakers like Nemes, who have impressed audiences before and hope to reclaim that reception for their latest projects.
As mentioned above, “Sunset” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before being shown at TIFF. There’s no worldwide release date set, but hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to see what Nemes has done with his latest film.
