While we await the true launch of the new DCU from DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran with “Superman” next year, it looks like development is moving along quite quickly with one of the films that will follow, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

According to THR, Matthias Schoenaerts has been cast in the villain role in the upcoming superhero film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Schoenaerts joins Milly Alcock in the cast, with the film being directed by Craig Gillespie.
Not much is known about the film, in terms of plot. It’s been said that ‘Supergirl’ will borrow heavily from the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic book of the same name. In that story, a young alien girl comes to Supergirl to ask for help with finding out who killed her family. Without getting into spoilers, there’s definitely a solid villain role in that story that could easily be played by Schoenaerts.
The actor is probably best known, to American audiences at least, for his roles in English-language films such as “The Old Guard,” “The Mustang,” and “A Hidden Life.” That said, when you take into consideration his earlier, international films such as “Rust & Bone” and “Bullhead,” he’s considered one of the best working today. ‘Supergirl’ will clearly be his highest profile film to date.
Filming for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is expected to begin early next year. The film is expected to arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026.
