In 2017, three actresses from “Saturday Night Live” were nominated in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category for the 69th Emmy Awards. That was half the nominees in that category. There is a strong chance Kate McKinnon, Chloe Fineman, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong could break that record. And as much as we love their talent, we’re not so sure that’s a great thing for the Emmys overall. Especially considering that many are upset “SNL” actors are recognized in the comedy series categories.
The good news is that two members of “Ted Lasso’s” fantastic ensemble, Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple, have an excellent chance of getting recognized. So does Zosia Mamet and Rosie Perez from “The Flight Attendant.” But, the “SNL” love is so strong, even in what seems like a very weak year for the venerable variety show, one or two of those four actresses may be snubbed. A snub during a not-so-competitive season overall for comedy series categories. But the actor’s branch of the Television Academy wouldn’t do that, would they? Would they? [Posted April 29]
