Filmmaker Taika Waititi is on the verge of releasing his next film, the controversial World War II satire “Jojo Rabbit.” And after that, for many people, the only thing that matters is his film “Thor: Love and Thunder.” However, before he tackles the MCU once again, he’s already lined up a soccer comedy film, and according to Deadline, another superhero film.
Deadline is reporting that Waititi is in talks to join the growing cast of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” superhero film for Warner Bros. and DC. There’s no word on what his role in the film might be, if it’s a meaty part or just a cameo. However, the addition of Waititi instantly makes whatever film he’s in even more exciting and watchable. “The Suicide Squad” is Gunn’s take on the popular DC superhero team of villains that are forced to work together on a series of impossible, suicidal missions.
Waititi joins a massive cast for Gunn’s superhero team-up film, including Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Steve Agee, and Nathan Fillion. The film is a pseudo-sequel to the 2016 film directed by David Ayer. Of course, as producers are saying, there is very little connection between the two films, outside of the returning cast members.
As mentioned, this is far from Waititi’s first foray into the world of superheroes. Even before he wrote, directed, and co-starred in “Thor: Ragnarok,” the filmmaker acted in the much-maligned “Green Lantern” film from 2011, opposite Ryan Reynolds.
“The Suicide Squad” is reportedly set to begin production on September 23 and will arrive in theaters on August 6, 2021.
