Happy Gilmore is heading back to the links! Today, Netflix has dropped a first-look teaser trailer for the Adam Sandler comedy “Happy Gilmore 2” and announced it will be heading to the streaming service on July 25.
Sandler plays Happy Gilmore, a passionate but hot-headed hockey player, who is a much better golfer than he is at his favorite sport. In the original film, Happy needs to raise money to save his grandmother’s house and discovers he can smash golf balls with an impressive but awkward-looking drive. Trying a brief hand at golf hustling before landing a golf pro mentor, played by the late Carl Weathers (“The Mandalorian”), he attempts to go professional as the prize money from a golf tournament, where he faced resident ace Shooter McGavin (a fantastic comedy bad guy played Christopher McDonald), would solve all his problems.
Tim Herlihy and Sandler co-wrote the follow-up comedy film with Kyle Newacheck directing.
Gilmore is much older in “Happy Gilmore 2” but is getting back into the swing of things in a more modern age of golfing while still using his “happy place” method to calm himself down to make near-impossible shots on the course and tune out his anger.
Like the 1996 original film, the sequel has plenty of cameos with infamous bad-boy golfer John Daly (said to be partly the inspiration for the beloved Sandler character) and Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce to name a few.
Others joining Sandler in the sequel will be McDonald, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny), Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, Philip Fine Schneider, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Blake Clark, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Paige Spiranic.
