Filmmaker Terence Nance is not the first name you’d probably come up with if you were naming someone to handle a massive blockbuster. The director’s first feature film, “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty,” is an experimental semi-animated film (check out the trailer below) that debuted at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival to pretty great reviews. The subject matter and visual style are not things you would see in any modern big-budget film. But apparently, the folks over at Warner Bros. are about to give him the keys to a major film franchise.
According to The Wrap, Nance is in “advanced negotiations” to helm the long-in-development “Space Jam 2,” starring Lebron James. The sequel to the 1996 hit, starring WB’s “Looney Tunes” characters playing basketball alongside Michael Jordan, has been talked about for years, with James attached to star. If you’re not familiar with the NBA, Lebron James is the biggest name in the sport and is putting up statistics and accolades that many think are equal to or surpassing Jordan. So, what’s next when you’ve won multiple championships and MVP awards? Clearly, you suit up and play basketball against animated characters.
But again, we are having a hard time wrapping our heads around the choice of Nance. Not that he’s a bad filmmaker, at all. If you see his aforementioned Sundance film, as well as the just recently released HBO series “Random Acts of Flyness,” it’s obvious that Nance is a strong up-and-coming filmmaker with a very distinct voice. How that translates to a massive budget and “Looney Tunes” characters is anybody’s guess. An odd, but perhaps inspired, choice.
As we’ve said, Nance’s latest project, the late-night show “Random Acts of Flyness” has just premiered on HBO (you can watch the full debut episode below) and looks to tackle a variety of cultural and societal issues making headlines. There’s even a segment featuring actor Jon Hamm discussing the medical condition known as “white thoughts.” Edgy and topical, ‘Flyness’ looks to be a show that people will be talking about.
So, congrats to Terence Nance on his “Space Jam 2” gig, but let’s just hope he doesn’t get chewed up and spit out by the studio system and can continue to use his distinct style and voice for future projects, as well.
