Terrence Malick's 'Radegund' Reportedly Poised To Debut At This Year's Cannes Film Festival

Yesterday, we wrote about what films have been rumored to be locks for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, headlined by the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which is rumored to be debuting on May 21 (which would make it exactly 25 years after “Pulp Fiction” debuted at the fest). And now, thanks to the folks at Deadline, the Cannes picture is becoming a bit more clear.

The big news is that it’s looking more and more likely that Terrence Malick’s long-awaited “Radegund” is poised to debut at Cannes. The report says that the filmmaker’s latest work is not quite ready for prime time but is still being screened for Cannes folks, in hopes it gets chosen. With the anticipation surrounding the film (which went into production in 2016), stemming from the fact that Malick is a filmmaking legend, it’s highly unlikely that Cannes will turn down the chance to premiere the film, if it’s going to be ready in time.

Another film that is seemingly destined for a Cannes screening is Pedro Almodóvar’sPain & Glory,” starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. This film is definitely ready to go, as it begins its theatrical run in Spain this week, however, would still qualify for the French film festival.

Hirokazu Kore-eda’sThe Truth” has yet to screen for Cannes folks, but with its strong French cast, and the fact that Kore-eda was last year’s Palme d’Or winner, make the film a perfect fit for the festival. Other films that the report says are on the bubble and aren’t being confirmed are Pablo Larrain’sEma,” Elia Suleiman’sIt Must Be Heaven,” Bong Joon Ho’sParasite,” Atom Egoyan’sGuest Of Honour,” and Justin Kurzel’sThe True History Of The Kelly Gang.”

Two films that are also highly-anticipated, and also rumored for Cannes, are James Gray’sAd Astra,” starring Brad Pitt, and Benedict Andrews’ “Against All Enemies,” starring Kristen Stewart.

The former seems to be a simple case of the film not being ready, as Gray is still toiling around with VFX work. The director has previously said that the VFX were taking a long time for the film and that a May debut wasn’t a guarantee. As for the latter, apparently, those behind-the-scenes folks think a Venice debut for K-Stew is better, as they have their sights set on awards consideration, even though the actress is beloved in France.

The speculation is soon to be over, thankfully, as the official line-up will be unveiled in the weeks to come. The 2019 Cannes Film Festival will begin on May 14.
