If we had to sum up the first quarter-plus of the 2019 film industry’s news in one person, it would have to be Brie Larson. Not only does she currently have the biggest film of the year, but she’s also the person that has become a lightning rod for many of today’s social issues, as trolls and others have tried to take her down based on her beliefs. And another person who feels the same is Tessa Thompson, one of Larson’s MCU cohorts.
In a short essay Thompson penned for Time’s 100 list, in which Brie Larson is included, the actress talks about the “Captain Marvel” star, not just about her talent, but also her effect on the industry and world, as a whole.
“For Brie, it just comes naturally,” wrote Thompson. “Her activism is an extension of who she is. She sits at a table and wants to make sure everyone has access to it. She is constantly investigating how to be a better ally.”
She added, “Brie is primed to be one of Marvel’s next big leaders at a time when women are breaking ceilings in all spaces. She is in a position to make real systemic change in Hollywood. I’m elated to see someone so pure of intention wield that power.”
As mentioned, Larson’s activism has been seen as threatening by many people, as they’ve tried everything in their power to sabotage her career, particularly with the release of “Captain Marvel.” Using bots to distort reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, starting anti-Larson hashtags, and various other schemes have failed to derail the Oscar-winner’s rise to superstardom.

And for people like Thompson, and millions of others that have enjoyed Larson’s work, the “Captain Marvel” actress is a symbol of the progress that the film industry has made over the years and hopefully, will continue to make in the years to come.
Larson joins Spike Lee, Mahershala Ali, Rami Malek, Sandra Oh, and other film and TV stars in this year’s selection of Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People.
