Against all odds, it really seems like this “Men in Black” sequel/reboot/spin-off is actually going to happen!
After “The Fate of the Furious” director F. Gary Gray was announced as the director, and Chris Hemsworth was signed as the star, we finally have another name to add to the project. According to The Tracking Board, Chris Hemsworth’s co-star in “Thor: Ragnarok,” Tessa Thompson has signed on to be in the upcoming sci-fi/action/comedy film.
While details are fairly scarce about the new “Men in Black,” it is being described as an “ensemble” film in the report, which leads us to believe that other big names will soon be announced. As mentioned above, Thompson and Hemsworth recently shared the screen in the latest “Thor” film, which was a massive success for Marvel Studios. Of course, the folks on ‘MIB’ are hoping these two can replicate the chemistry that worked so well in that film.
Let’s not forget that Thompson is also an accomplished actress outside of the superhero universe. She was most recently seen in Alex Garland’s great “Annihilation,” and was previously in “Creed” and “Dear White People.” Thompson will next star in the upcoming “Sorry to Bother You.”
While Hemsworth has a history of doing comedy, particularly the type of broad comedy that works in “Men in Black,” Thompson hasn’t really had the chance to fully show her comedic prowess. Perhaps, she’ll play the more straight-laced agent of the group. All bets are off in this film since the franchise is moving on from the Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones days.
The “Men in Black” sequel/reboot has gone through a couple different iterations before arriving at this version. Before F. Gary Gray came on board, there were rumors and talk that producers were considering a ‘MIB’/”21 Jump Street” crossover featuring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller overseeing the project. Now, it seems like the studio is interested in a more traditional reboot of the franchise.
“Men In Black” is set to be released June 14, 2019.
