And, well, keep your eyes peeled for additional 2024 features to mention some of those titles, including editions about blockbusters and horrors. In the meantime, we do have lots of honorable mention sections for namechecks.

Honorable Mention: The Blockbusters/Big Studio Releases
Some of these films don’t need our help, and maybe some of them don’t looks so hot, but sure, he’s a name check of some upcoming blockbusters you might be looking forward may include things like Dakota Johnson’s already meme-worthy “Madame Web”; “Kraven The Hunter” from director J.C Chandor; “Kung Fu Panda 4″ starring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, and Awkwafina; Matthew Vaughn‘s spy flick, “Argylle” with Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell; Netflix’s “The Old Guard 2” with Charlize Theron; Eli Roth’s reportedly troubled  “Borderlands” staring the excellent cast of Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Edgar Ramirez and Haley Bennett; Tim Burton’s belated, “Beetlejuice 2”; the animated “Transformers One” featuring the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henry; the horror sequel “Smile 2”; Jon M. Chu‘s “Wicked: Part One” starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande; Columbia’s “The Karate Kid 2” (which may not have even shot) and Jeff Fowler‘s four-quadrant friendly, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” (hey, we did a whole side feature for most of these films here!)

Honorable Mention: Big Studio Releases
Look, if it’s released in January or early in the year, the chances of it being amazing aren’t great. Hence, you can find in this section of our list movies coming early in the year that include Paramount‘s “Mean Girls” musical remake; Universal and Blumhouse‘s “Night Swim” with Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon; F Gary Gray‘s Netflix heist movie “Lift” with Kevin Hart; Amazon‘s “Role Play” with Kaley Cuoco, David Oyelowo; “It Ends with Us” starring Blake Lively” and Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” from director Reinaldo Marcus Green starring Kingsley Ben-Adir.

Honorable Mention: Grab Bag Section
What else is coming out in 2024 that could be interesting? Well, glad you asked. Paul Feig returns with the action comedy “Grand Death Lotto” starring John Cena and Awkwafina; Clint Eastwood returns for “Juror No.2” with Nicholas Hoult; Julia Garner stars in “Apartment 7A” which is a “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel; “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” filmmaker Ned Benson returns with “The Greatest Hits” a sci-fi-ish romantic musical starring Lucy Boynton; Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick, Marton Csokas star in the horror thriller “Cuckoo” which will probably premiere at Sundance, so we’ll cover that there; Richard LaGravenese returns for a Netflix rom-com “A Family Affair” starring Joey King, Zac Efron, and Nicole Kidman. Wes Anderson is rumored to have more ‘Henry Sugar’ shorts. Could Netflix repackage them and release them in 2024?

What’s not coming until 2025 {Editor’s note: Peele’s film was originally on our list, but we were proven right; it’s pushed until 2025 at least; the original capsule is below.

Untitled Jordan Peele film
No one in the last decade went from filmmaker-to-watch to Quentin Tarantino-like filmmaking name and event-film maker faster than Jordan Peele. Get Out,” “Us,” and “Nope” transformed Peele into a household name for cinemagoers, so naturally, his next film is a big secret, other than “a little bit of horror, a little bit of comedy.”

Caution! No cast was announced. Now, was it shot in secret, or is this release date folly? Given that “Nosferatu” took this release date and Comcast owns Universal and Focus Features, there’s a safe bet to be made, this one is going to push off until 2025 (maybe by an entire year?). In that event, we’ll take this one off the piece and add one more, but just FYI, this one should be considered super tentative at the moment.
Release Date: Dec. 25, 2024, via Universal. Universal took it off the 2024 calendar near the end of 2023.

The sequel to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning has been officially pushed to 2025. Adam Sandler’s intended re-collaboration with the Safdie Brothers never shot, so we’ll have to wait. Noah Baumbach’s got a movie in the works rumored to star Brad Pitt and Adam Sandler, but it also won’t go into production until 2024. Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Blade,” “Thunderbolts and “Fantastic Four” are now all 2025 films. Disney’s “Snow White,” Pixar’s “Elio,” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” won’t arrive in 2024. DC Studios won’t start until Summer 2025 with James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy.” Where’s Spike Jonze been? He’s rumored to be working on a Netflix series. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II” is currently set for a 2025 release. “Avatar 3,” “Minecraft,” “Fast X: Part 2,” “The Exorcist: Deceiver,” the live-action “Moana,” and “Wicked: Part Two” are all not arriving until 2025, FYI. Paul Thomas Anderson reportedly has a new movie in the works starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joaquin Phoenix, and more, and he’s confirmed a new film is on the way without saying much else. Still, it won’t shoot until early 2024 at the earliest, so don’t expect it this year. Lastly, while we are here, does anyone know what happened to the Martin Scorsese-directed  SCTV comedy, “An Afternoon with SCTV,” and if it is still happening? Let’s hope this year is better than the deeply troubled 2023.
