“Evil Dead Rise”
More “Evil Dead,” obviously! Apparently, Sam Raimi handpicked Irish director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”) for the fifth installment in the franchise, and we can’t wait to see what he does with it. Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, and Morgan Davies and is a twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival.
Release date: TBD via HBO Max.
“Flux Gourmet”
“In Fabric” director Peter Strickland doesn’t strictly do horror, but he absolutely does horrifying, and this synopsis—centering on an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, where a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders— already has our stomachs churning. Asa Butterfield and Gwendoline Christie lead what is sure to be one of the sickest films of the year, inspired by Strickland’s frustration with “how alimentary disorders or food allergies have been comically portrayed in some films.”
Release date: TBD via IFC Films, but it will premiere in Berlin first.
“Fresh”
This first feature from music video director Mimi Cave stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”) and Sebastian Stan (“I, Tonya”), and that premise has us more than intrigued: The horrors of modern dating seen through one young woman’s defiant battle to survive her new boyfriend’s unusual appetites. We already know Stan can pull off psycho pretty well, so it’ll be a treat to see how this anti-dating cautionary tale goes down.
Release date: Premieres in January at Sundance, then March 4 via Hulu.
“Halloween Ends”
The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode comes to a spine-chilling climax in this final installment of the “Halloween” franchise. Yes, “Halloween Kills” was pretty meh, but we’re hoping David Gordon Green pulls out all the stops for his last stab at the iconic franchise. No matter what, Jamie Lee Curtis will certainly slay. Andi Matichak, Judy Greer and Will Patton co-star.
Release date: October 14 via Universal.
“Hellraiser”
It’s a reboot of the 1987 horror film about an evil creature who is summoned from another dimension. More specifically, a woman discovers the newly resurrected, partially formed, body of her brother-in-law. She starts killing for him to revitalize his body so he can escape the demonic beings that are pursuing him after he escaped their sadistic underworld. Two things: Jamie Clayton as Pinhead and a script by “The Night House” duo Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski are super enticing. We don’t need to know anything else. We’re in.
Release date: TBD via Hulu.
