60. “Godzilla & the Titans” (Apple TV+)
Monster show! There just aren’t enough of those, right? The world of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, which includes projects like “Godzilla vs. Kong” is actually getting a TV show! It sounds too good to be true, but if anyone has the deep pockets to make a monster movie series that looks legit, it’s Apple TV+. Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, this series picks up after the battle that leveled San Francisco, centering a family that is somehow linked to the organization known as Monarch, the nefarious government agency that has connected the films since the 2014 “Godzilla” reboot. The wonderful Kiersey Clemons stars, but one of the true casting draws may be getting to see father-son Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell act opposite each other!
Airdate: TBD – BT
59. “The Power” (Prime Video)
Created for Amazon by Naomi Alderman, “The Power” is based on her award-winning 2017 science-fiction novel of the same name. About a group of teenage girls who mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will, all ten episodes of this series will be directed by Reed Morano. It stars Leslie Mann in her first regular TV role, playing Margot Cleary-Lopez, a longtime politician and current mayor of Seattle. After spending her whole career in a man’s world, Mann’s character will now have to reckon with the newfound superpower of teenage girls everywhere.
Airdate: TBD – RP
58. “Beef” (Netflix)
An upcoming comedy-drama television series created by Lee Sung Jin for Netflix, with A24 as producers, the show centers on an incident of road rage slowly that consumes the two people involved. Of course, those two people are Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. David Choe, Patti Yasutake, Maria Bello, Ashley Park, and Justin H. Min co-star, and the project launched a big bidding war when it was announced, with Netflix pouncing and shelling out the most dough.
Airdate: TBD – RP
57. “Chief of War” (Apple TV+)
Jason Momoa just finished a run on “See” at the streaming giant, but he’s going right back into the fray, executive producing and starring in this miniseries that will include direction from Justin Chon (“Blue Bayou”). Momoa once again finds himself fighting for power in the natural world, but this time it’s back in the history of Hawaii, playing a famous warrior named Ka’iana. The leader wants to put away his spear, but can’t for long in what sounds like an epic production, co-starring Temuera Morrison, also known as Mr. Boba Fett.
Airdate: TBD – BT
56. “Fallout” (Prime Video)
Someone has been trying to make a movie based on the hit Bethesda game series for a generation now, with a “Fallout” film announced as a potential project back in the late ‘90s, a screenwriter even attached in 2002. That fell apart, and the projects lingered in development hell until 2020 when Prime Video got behind a “Fallout” TV series with mega-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan at the wheel. The team behind “Westworld” has a solid history with post-apocalyptic chaos, and Nolan will direct the premiere himself, which apparently stars Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell. Kyle MacLachlan joined the promising series that started shooting in July of this year.
Airdate: TBD – BT
55. “Washington Black” (Hulu)
The novel by Esi Edugyan will be adapted by the streamer Hulu into the first major project for Sterling K. Brown since breaking hearts on “This is Us.” Apparently, in some state of production for a few years, “Washington Black” actually tells the tale of an 11-year-old boy on a Barbados sugar plantation in the 19th century who is forced to flee and becomes the protege of Brown’s Mayor of Black Halifax. The show is being run by the talented Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, who wrote the excellent “Replay” episode of Jordan Peele’s reboot of “The Twilight Zone.”
Airdate: TBD – BT
54. “1883: The Bass Reeves Story” (Paramount+)
You could potentially consider this the Taylor Sheridan-verse capsule. Coming next year from his cottage industry is “Mayor Of Kingstown” Season 2 (January 15), and coming later in the year is possibly the CIA drama, “Lioness” starring Zoe Saldana, and “Yellowstone” spin-of “6666” set in Texas featuring the ranch hand, Jimmy (Jefferson White). But the most interesting of the bunch is “1883: The Bass Reeves Story,” about a U.S. Deputy Marshal in the 1800s (played by David Oyelowo) considered by many as one of the greatest Black lawmen that ever lived. Considering the title, “1883,” the name of one of Sheridan’s previous limited series and spin-offs, there’s a good bet that some of the characters from that show — Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett — could conceivably turn up in small appearances.
Airdate: TBD. – RP
53. “Platonic” (Apple TV+)
One of the modern kings of the movie comedy, Nick Stoller, takes the skills he honed in films like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Neighbors” to Apple TV+ with a very promising rom-com that reunites the stars of the latter, Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen. Not much is known about the premise, but it sounds like it’s kind of an update of “When Harry Met Sally…” with Rogen and Byrne playing former platonic friends who reunite, and, well, maybe things happen? We don’t know but putting these two in a half-hour comedy with Stoller’s often-witty writing is enough.
Airdate: TBD – BT
52. “Kaleidoscope” (Netflix)
One of the most unique shows of 2023 promises to be its first, a program that’s dropping in its entirety on the first day of the year, and encourages viewers to watch it in whatever order they want. This Jose Padilha-helmed series chronicles a heist from different perspectives of the participants, allowing viewers to basically shuffle the episodes, coming into the experience wherever and whenever they want, getting a different aspect of the story with each chapter. It boasts a strong cast that includes Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, Jai Courtney, and Rufus Sewell, but the real draw sounds like it will be a unique presentation.
Airdate: January 1, 2023 – BT
51. “Loki” Season 2 (Disney+)
Of the myriad Marvel Studios series that have arrived over the past two years, it may surprise you to know that none have been more popular than “Loki.” Starring Tom Hiddleston as the title character—err, one of the title characters—the story of the TVA and multiverses continues in Season 2, arriving in 2023. Not much is known about the show other than we fully expect to see Hiddleston and Owen Wilson’s Mobius on various time-traveling, multiversal shenanigans. Oh, and it’ll be a massive hit for Disney.
Airdate: TBD, but mid-to-late 2023 seems safe – Charles Barfield
