When it was announced that Paul Dano was going to play The Riddler in “The Batman,” fans were surprised but excited. Dano doesn’t strike people as the type of actor who would go for a big franchise superhero film, but when you see him, you can fully understand why he was chosen for the role. And apparently, even though Dano had to jump through hoops while working on “The Batman,” in terms of insane security, the actor has continued to work in the world of superheroes. Just in a different medium.
Speaking to GQ Hype, Paul Dano talked about the rigorous security that surrounded his time on “The Batman” and explained how he’s now going all-in with being a comic book writer, inspired by his time in the superhero film.
Apparently, the security surrounding everything to do with “The Batman” during the production of the film was next level, including Dano getting a “special binder” that held all of the secrets of the film.
“Don’t lose this. Put it in your ‘special binder,’” Dano explained. “But this was the first time I had a binder with a locking code on it. Then they added a tracking device.”
Even though there was strict security, Dano still turned in one of the best villain performances in a modern superhero film. Not only that, it appears Dano is ready to stick with the world of superheroes, as he now adds “comic book writer” to his list of job titles. Recently, it was announced that Dano is set to write a Riddler comic book story for DC Comics, which is set to arrive later this month.
“I would have been less ready to do a film like ‘The Batman’ when I was 25,” he told the magazine. “I think I would really have had a hard time doing all the press and getting recognized. And I can handle that now. The biggest difference now is that I want it more clearly, frankly. Like: I want to be an artist, and I want to be an actor, I want to be a director, I really want to make my next film. And, um, I guess I want to be a comic book writer?”
He added that his Riddler comic book, titled “The Riddler: Year One” is “an emotional horror story about trauma.” Dano is so happy with his work on the book that he said, “This comic feels like my next film.”
“The Batman” is now available on HBO Max and “The Riddler: Year One” will debut in comic book stores on October 25.
