After months of drama and mostly negative reviews coming from its highly-publicized Cannes debut, HBO’s newest series, “The Idol,” is finally hitting TV screens later this week.
And in honor of the series finally making its debut, HBO has released a trailer for “The Idol,” which is definitely the buzziest show of the summer. The series follows the story of a pop star who falls under the influence of a creepy nightclub owner. From there, their lives are completely changed.
But the premise of the show is really secondary, right now, to the drama that surrounded the production of “The Idol.” It’s too much to recap now, but suffice it to say, co-creators Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye have been doing quite a bit of damage control before the debut of the show.
All of that will be fine if the show is actually great, right? Well, the series currently sits at a terrible 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and our review isn’t very complimentary. It says, “For her part, Lily-Rose [Depp] is fully committed. She gives everything: body, soul, and heart. And yet, you can’t help but wonder why she must answer for this much while receiving only morsels of a character. She deserves better. Unless ‘The Idol’ changes drastically in the next few episodes, she will be nothing more than the window dressing of a concept in service of a misguided, gross, unaware, and untenable vanity project.”
“The Idol” hits HBO on June 4. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?
