Back in early September, Gia Coppola‘s “The Last Showgirl” hit the festival circuit like a lightning bolt. Here’s Coppola, with her first film since 2020’s “Mainstream,” with a short, probing look at Las Vegas with a devastating lead turn from Pamela Anderson no one knew the “Baywatch” star was capable of. This is the stuff of awards season magic, right?
That’s what Roadside Attractions hope, as they’ll distribute “The Last Showgirl” to LA theaters next month in a bad for the film to receive awards consideration. General audiences elsewhere will need to wait until next January to get a peek themselves, but if Coppola’s latest garners more buzz, maybe it’ll sneak into a NYC theater or two before 2024 comes to a close?
Here’s an official synopsis for “The Last Showgirl,” courtesy of Roadside Attractions:
The Last Showgirl, a poignant film of resilience, rhinestones and feathers, stars Pamela Anderson as Shelley, a glamorous showgirl who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.
Alongside Anderson, “The Last Showgirl” also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, and Billie Lourd.
Coppola directs a script by Kate Gersten. Robert Schwartzman leads producers with Natalie Farrey and Coppola.
“The Last Showgirl” had its world premiere earlier this year at TIFF, where it scored high with critics. The Playlist’s review called the film “something special” and a “poetic perspective of Vegas,” grading it a B-.
Coppola’s latest gets an awards-qualifying theatrical run in LA on December 14 before opening in theaters everywhere next year on January 10, 2025. Watch a trailer for “The Last Showgirl” below.
