That’s the case with the upcoming Netflix feature, “The Lost Daughter.”
With “The Lost Daughter” expected to make its debut at Venice shortly, Netflix has gone ahead and released some first-look images of from the feature. The film tells the story of an older woman that is obsessively watching a young mother and her daughter while on vacation. This unusual situation spirals out of control, as you might expect.
Joining Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson in the cast are Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Dagmara Dominczyk, Paul Mescal, Jack Farthing, Robyn Elwell, Ellie Blake, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Panos Koronis, Alexandros Mylonas, Alba Rohrwacher, Nikos Poursanidis, and Athena Martin. As mentioned, “The Lost Daughter” is the directorial debut for Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film is expected to be one of Netflix’s big awards season contenders.

Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences. This is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, based on the novel by Elena Ferrante.
