FX is staying in the literary adaptation business with a new limited series built around a very loaded love triangle. The network has ordered “The Marriage Plot,” a limited series for FX and Hulu based on the acclaimed novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Middlesex” and “The Virgin Suicides.” Sadie Sink, best known for “Stranger Things” and “The Whale,” is attached to star and executive produce.
The series comes from executive producer and writer Will Arbery, whose credits include “Succession” and FX’s upcoming “Seven Sisters.” Hiro Murai, the Emmy-nominated filmmaker behind “Atlanta,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and “Widow’s Bay,” is set to direct and executive produce. A24 and FX Productions will produce.
Eugenides’ novel follows three recent college graduates caught in a consuming romantic triangle as they move out of the defined structure of campus life and into adulthood, where those big ideas about love, identity, ambition, and the future start to run into real consequences. FX’s description keeps the adaptation in that register, centering the story on three young people as they reconcile their youthful romantic ideals with the life-altering choices just beyond them.
“The Marriage Plot” was published in 2011 and quickly became one of Eugenides’ defining works, arriving after “Middlesex” and extending his interest in family, desire, intellect, and the private mythologies people build around themselves. It also seems like a natural fit for Arbery, whose theater and television work has often explored belief systems, moral self-interrogation, and people who can explain themselves beautifully until their lives push back.
“The Marriage Plot is a perfect fit for FX: ambitious, character-driven storytelling that offers another great opportunity to partner with exceptional artists,” said Gina Balian, President, FX Entertainment. “We look forward to building on our partnerships with Will and Hiro, both of whom are extraordinary talents with whom we are proud to work again.”
The order also deepens FX’s relationship with Arbery, who has quickly become a major writer for the network. “The Marriage Plot” marks his second FX series order in less than a year, following “Seven Sisters,” which was picked up in December 2025. Before his television work, Arbery broke through in theater with “Heroes Of The Fourth Turning,” a Pulitzer Prize finalist and one of the most acclaimed plays of 2019. He later wrote for HBO’s “Succession,” earning a WGA Award for Episodic Drama.
Murai, meanwhile, remains one of the more distinctive directors working across television, music videos, and film. In addition to his work on “Atlanta,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and “The Bear,” he directed Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” music video, which earned the MTV Video Music Award for Best Direction. He is also developing his directorial debut feature, the A24 samurai film “Bushido,” through his company Chum Films.
Executive producers on “The Marriage Plot” include Arbery, Murai, Steven Prinz, and Rachel Jacobs for Borderless Pictures, Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman for Aggregate Films, Eugenides, Sink, Carver Karaszewski, and Claudia Shin for Chum Films. Yiyi Huang will serve as producer.
No premiere date or additional casting has been announced yet.
