Filming has been underway in Morocco for Christopher Nolan‘s anticipated follow-up to “Oppenheimer,” with “The Odyssey. Nolan has assembled quite the cast for the event pic, based on the Greek myth epic penned by Homer, and another high-profile actor has joined the project.
An update from Deadline revealed today that “Shogun” and “Warfare” actor Cosmo Jarvis has taken a role alongside the rest of the impressive cast that already features Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, and Corey Hawkins.
“The Odyssey” is an epic tale that sees Odysseus’ journey from the Trojan War back to his wife and kingdom. As most Greek myths do, the heroic figure played by Damon must face a slew of hardships and dangerous threats as he deals with a witch, sirens, sea beasts, and even a giant cyclops that chip away at his loyal crew one by one.
Nolan isn’t a stranger to large-scale genre filmmaking by any means with his “Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception,” “The Prestige,” and “Tenet” being great examples of his experience tackling something as large as “The Odyssey.” But his latest pic is expected to be the first time he’s tackled the fantasy and sword-and-sandals genre, and as you might assume calls for much more visual effects than previous efforts. A daunting task given his desire to do as much filming in-camera as humanly possible without overloading the final film with CGI.
A slew of set photos highlighting the impressive/elaborate practical sets and online rumblings that the Cyclops, one of many mythical creatures in the flick, is said to be done with puppetry.
Universal Pictures has previously set the release for “The Odyssey” on July 17, 2026, and hopefully, we’ll get to see more official stills from the film in the coming weeks and months with events like CinemaCon in Las Vegas coming up soon.
