Acclaimed out of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the Studio Canal addiction and rehabilitation drama, “The Outrun,” opens in the U.K. in the early fall. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Paapa Essiedu, a life-changing escape into the wilds of Orkney awaits in the new “Outrun.”. Based on Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir and directed by German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt—known for “The Unforgivable” featuring Sandra Bullock— “The Outrun” received much praise at Sundance, especially for Ronan’s lead performance.
The film centers on a woman (Ronan) who attempts to come to terms with her troubled past after living life on the edge in London. She returns to the wild beauty of Scotland’s Orkney Islands (where she grew up), hoping to heal, but obviously, the past and trauma have other plans.
“The Outrun” also stars Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle, Lauren Lyle. Saskia Reeves and Stephen Dillane.

Saoirse Ronan stars as Rona, who, fresh out of rehab, returns to the Orkney Islands; a place both wild and beautiful right off the Scottish coast. After more than a decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love, Rona – now 30 – attempts to come to terms with her troubled past. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.
Obviously, “The Outrun” begins and ends with Ronan. To say she’s up for the challenge is an understatement. It’s a solid performance and, somewhat impressively, not as showy as you might expect given the material,” our review from Sundance wrote.
Meanwhile, “The Outrun” has no U.S. release date yet. Studio Canal has set a September 27 release in the U.K. and a November 7 date in Germany. Hopefully, a North American date will surface soon. Watch the first trailer below, and also check out the new poster.
