‘The Palace’ First Look: Kate Winslet Stars In Upcoming HBO Limited Series About An Authoritarian Regime In Its Twilight

When Kate Winslet and HBO team up, great things happen. Don’t believe it? Well, there’s “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare Of Easttown” as evidence, which won five and three Emmys respectively, with Winslet winning Best Lead Actress for both. So, it’s fair to say there are great expectations for “The Palace,” HBO’s latest limited series starring Winslet.

Is one first-look photo enough to remeasure expectations? Not really, but HBO’s first still from their upcoming series offers a glimpse at what to expect from the secretive drama. So what’s the plot of The Palace”? Details are slim, but it follows one year behind the palace walls of an authoritarian regime as it starts to unravel. And from the new still, it looks like Winslet’s proud character has a lot invested in the crumbling political regime.

“The Palace” comes from “Succession” duo Will Tracy and Frank Rich. “The Queen” director Stephen Frears directs the series. Alongside Winslet, the show also stars Matthias SchoenaertsGuillaume GallienneAndrea RiseboroughMartha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant

Most intriguing is the writing team behind “The Palace,” a varied bunch to say the least. First off, the team boasts three late-night writers, former The Onion writer Seth Reiss (“Late Night With Seth Meyers“), Juli Weiner (“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver“), and Jen Spyra (“The Late Night With Stephen Colbert“). Also on board: Gary Shteyngart, whose credits include The New Yorker and “The Russian Debutante’s Handbook.” Then there’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies” scribe Sarah DeLappe. So safe to presume a snappy comedic script from this lot, which is a much different mood than “Mildred Pierce” and “Mare Of Easttown.”

No word on when “The Palace” premieres on HBO. But since the series is in production now in Austria and will move soon to the UK, maybe don’t expect it this calendar year; or maybe it’ll sneak in as a late-2023 release. In any case, more Kate Winslet on HBO is always worth the wait. Take a look at the first-look photo for ‘The Palace’ below.
