'The Covenant' Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Stars In Guy Ritchie's Warzone Thriller On April 21

With a long and varied career under his belt, Jake Gyllenhaal has earned the right to develop whatever projects he wants — and it looks like he wants to work with every A-list action director he can get his hands on. With recent collaborations with Antoine Fuqua (“The Guilty“) and Michael Bay (“Ambulance“), as well as his upcoming remake of “Road House” with director Doug Liman,” Gyllenhaal is well on his way to building an impressive mid-career action resume. So it only makes sense that he teams up with Guy Ritchie on a movie like “The Covenant,” (technically titled “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” who does he think he is, Zack Snyder?), which has him returning to the role of an American soldier at war.

In the upcoming film, Gyllenhaal is an Army Sergeant who returns to the battlefield to rescue the Afghan interpreter who saved his life. Here’s the official synopsis for “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant”:

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley and Afghan interpreter Ahmed. After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley’s life. When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first.

Dar Salim joins Gyllenhaal for Ritchie’s wartime two-hander, whose international work is much stronger than his previous flirtations with Hollywood roles (Ridley Scott‘s “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” a rare misfire from the legendary director). “The Covenant” also marks Ritchie’s second theatrical release of 2023, with the long-delayed “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” hitting theaters on March 17. Also upcoming for Ritchie: the Netflix spin-off of “The Gentlemen,” “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” “Aladdin 2,” and Disney‘s live-action remake of “Hercules.”

Thanks to co-distribution from MGM and Amazon, expect “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” to hit Amazon Prime Video after it hits theaters on April 21. Watch a trailer for the film below.
