An imaginative romance comes with surprising conditions in the upcoming Lionsgate release “The Right One.” In the film, a case of writer’s block leads one novelist to meet a mysterious stranger. Cases of writer’s block seem to be a recent go-to strategy for filmmakers—Steven Soderbergh’s “Let Them Talk” is a fantastic example with writer Deborah Eisenberg positioning it as more than a character trait.
Cleopatra Coleman heads up the cast, which also features comedian Iliza Shlesinger and David Koechner. Coleman has already proven herself to be a versatile comedic actress with appearances on “Sorry for Your Loss“ and “The Last Man on Earth.” Under the usual romantic constructs sits the possibility that ‘One’ could address mental health issues. Teased as a character with past issues and an avoidance of what life truly is, Nick Thune’s Godfrey is more than just a romantic leading man. Instead, his place in the story opens the door towards conversations regarding how people are dealing with their own pandemic-created worlds. Thune himself brings a comedic aspect to the role—something cultivated over years of stand-up performances.
The film’s official Synopsis:
In this heartfelt and hilarious rom-com, Sara, a novelist struggling with writer’s block, needs inspiration — and finds it when she serendipitously meets Godfrey, a down-on-his-luck oddball who constantly changes personas and alter egos in order to cope with his past and avoid reality. Just as Godfrey begins to open up to Sara, he discovers that she’s been using him as inspiration for her next novel, and he vanishes from her life. Did Sara just lose the man of her dreams, or will she be able to find him and make things right?
