It’s been about a year-and-a-half since Macon Blair’s “The Toxic Avenger” debuted at Fantastic Fest in 2023. The film earned rave reviews (currently sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes) and seemed like it was ready for a wide release. But then, nothing. No news about when we might see the film. The cast didn’t know when it was going to hit theaters. Nothing. Well, thankfully, we finally know the film will get released.
According to Variety, “The Toxic Avenger” has been picked up by Cineverse for a wide release sometime in 2025. No exact date was given, but we also know the film will be unrated when it hits theaters. This is a similar release strategy that we saw with “Terrifier 3,” which was a big hit when it arrived in theaters last fall.

“The Toxic Avenger” stars Peter Dinklage alongside Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood. The film follows the story of a lowly janitor who falls in a vat of toxic waste and gains superpowers. It’s a remake of the cult classic 1984 film of the same name. The film is written and directed by the aforementioned Macon Blair, who is known for his debut feature, “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore.”

Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original Toxie (which was seared into my brain at a very young age) and try to make something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh. Lloyd and Michael at Troma have been a blast to work with, absolutely everyone at Legendary are stars, and I can’t wait to start working with the champs at Cineverse to bring this version of Toxie to fans new and old.”
As mentioned above, film fans have been waiting quite a while for news about this film’s release. Back when it played Fantastic Fest in 2023, a teaser trailer was actually released that got people really excited. But again, no release date was mentioned at the time. The film was produced by Legendary, the same company who released the “Dune” films. Obviously, this film is a bit of a different beast than Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed sci-fi epic.
Again, it’s unknown when in 2025 we will see “The Toxic Avenger,” but at least we know it’s coming now. You can watch the teaser below.
