Netflix wants to play coy with “The Watcher”, though, as the first teaser isn’t a trailer so much as a fake commercial.  Jennifer Coolidge carries the spot as a realtor seemingly desperate to sell off a New Jersey townhouse. The house is gorgeous, but Coolidge’s Karen Calhoun comes off a little cloying, in a “I’ve got ulterior motives” kind of way. So, what exactly is she hiding about this house?

Here’s an official synopsis of “The Watcher” courtesy of Netflix:

Dean and Nora Brannock just purchased their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after putting all of their savings into closing the deal they soon realize the neighborhood is less than welcoming. There’s a kooky older woman named Pearl and her brother Jasper, who sneaks into the Brannock’s house and hides in their dumbwaiter. There’s Karen, the realtor and an old acquaintance of Nora’s, who makes them feel like they don’t really belong, and nosy neighbors Mitch (Richard Kind) and Mo, who don’t seem to understand property lines. Their icy welcome quickly turns into a full-blown living hell when ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” start arriving, terrorizing the Brannocks to their breaking point as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Based on the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey.

Beyond Coolidge, “The Watcher” also stars Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts, Mia Farrow, and Maro Martindale. The series also stars Terry Kinney, Joe Mantello, Richard Kind, Numa Dumezweni, and Christopher McDonaldMichael Nouri, Isabel Gravitt, Henry Hunter Hall, and Luke David Blumm round out the main cast.

“The Watcher” is the brainchild of TV vets Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The pair have another true crime limited series on the way at Netflix, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” apparently hitting the streamer before the year is out.
