An official selection of the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, “There There” follows seven loosely intertwined characters to tell a story about connection while playing off of the isolation we became too familiar with during the pandemic.
“There There,” which is the seventh feature film directed by Andrew Bujalski, throws away the norms of filmmaking and the so-called rules that directors follow to give us an insight into the life and conversations that we saw come to the forefront during the pandemic but don’t see represented on the big screen.
The pandemic shut down how the world operated for an extended period of time, and filmmaking wasn’t an exception to that. While many filmmakers adapted to the restrictions and proceeded in a way that was as “normal” as possible, Bujalski took the opposite approach. In “There There,” none of the actors were ever in the same room during filming. When talking about how he decided to let the distance of the actors define the film, he hesitated. “I got the idea that if we couldn’t build intimacy in the way we are accustomed, perhaps we could invent a new way.” This is evident in the below clip featuring Jason Schwartzman and Avi Nash.
Starring alongside Nash and Schwartzman, the film stars Lili Taylor, Lennie James, Molly Gordon, Roy Nathanson, Jon Natchez, and Annie La Ganga. “There There” is distributed by Magnolia Pictures and will be released in theaters and on-demand on November 18, 2022.
