‘They Follow’: Maika Monroe Calls ‘It Follows’ Sequel “Bigger And Darker And More F*cked Up”

Announced around Halloween of last year, there hasn’t been much to say about the “It Follows” sequel, titled “They Follow.” We know David Robert Mitchell is returning to write and direct. And we know Maika Monroe is set to return to lead the cast. But other than that, we don’t have a clue what to expect. However, according to Monroe, the sequel is going to outdo the original in nearly every way.

Speaking to Collider, while promoting her upcoming horror-thriller, “Longlegs,” Maika Monroe talked about returning to the “It Follows” universe for “They Follow.” And the actress is quick to say that the sequel is more than just what you are expecting.

“I mean, at first I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’” explained Monroe. “And I read it, and it’s just so fucking good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more fucked up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.”

That’s high praise for any sequel, obviously. And of course, we should take her words with a dash of salt because she’s far from an unbiased opinion on the matter. That said, it’s difficult not to get a little excited when you read that quote.

“It Follows” was a breakout horror film when it was released nearly a decade ago. The film tells the story of a monster who is hot on the trail of a young girl after she has a sexual experience, with the only way to save yourself is to have sex and pass on the monster. (The STI analogy is pretty blunt, to be honest.)

We still don’t have a release date for “They Follow.” We do know that filming is expected to happen this year, which would point to a 2025 release date.
