Well, it looks like writer/director David Robert Mitchell‘s “It Follows” sequel at NEON with Maika Monroe (“Longlegs”) returning, called “They Follow,” is already in the casting phase and has a solid actress circling it for a lead role. As British actress Naomi Ackie is looking to take a mysterious part alongside Monroe, which is quite the exciting addition to the horror project.
The casting update hails from Deadline, who report that Ackie is in “final talks” for “They Follow” as the original horror installment had a really compelling take on the genre with a haunting trope being given a unqiue angle by having sex being how it’s transfered person to person. Monroe played a young woman who had to evade these malevolent spirits in persuit, that only she could see. Where things are going with the sequel remains to be seen, as plot/character details are being kept under lock-and-key.

“A psychological horror film centered on Jay Height (Monroe), a college student who, after a sexual encounter, becomes the target of an unstoppable supernatural entity. As the entity takes the form of random people, slowly but relentlessly stalking her and her friends through the Detroit area, she grapples with the fact that she will only be able to escape the curse she has inherited by passing it on to someone else through sex.”
Ackie is quite a great selection with a slew of interesting projects under her belt such as Bong Joon Ho‘s off-world sci-fi flick “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson as a slew of clones, Boots Riley‘s absurdist fashion world crime comedy “I Love Boosters,” co-starring with Jason Statham with his spy thriller “Shelter,” “Sorry, Baby,” played a former Stormtrooper in J.J. Abrams‘ “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and will be next seen in the DC Studios‘ body horror film “Clayface” (focusing on the shapeshifting Batman villain) arriving in theaters on October 23.
Mitchell’s next feature film is the Bad Robot-produced “The End of Oak Street,” a cosmic project featuring dinosuars that has Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway in lead roles as their sleepy suburb neighborhood is transformed into something strange, and heads into theaters on August 14. We’re hopeful that we’ll see more well-known names enlisted for other parts in “They Follow” alongside Monroe and Ackie, stay tuned for future casting updates for the sequel.
