Radiohead's Thom Yorke Is "Making Spells" In New Track From Upcoming 'Suspiria' Score

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has some mighty big shoes to fill as a film composer. If it wasn’t already anxiety-inducing to have your major film score debut attached to one of the most-anticipated films of the year, Yorke also is competing with fellow bandmate, Jonny Greenwood, who has already earned an Oscar nomination for his film work. However, judging by the first track released from the “Suspiria” soundtrack, Yorke probably has nothing to worry about.

“Suspirium,” the aforementioned track, shows just what Yorke is bringing to his film debut. For those not aware with “Suspiria,” you are in for a treat. The Luca Guadagnino-directed film is the remake of the classic Dario Argento horror film, and features a pretty incredible cast, as a young dancer becomes involved with a dance troupe that may or may not have a witchy background.

And it was that magical influence that helped Yorke come up with his unique take on the film’s score. He readily admits that he couldn’t just replicate the work that Argento and the band Goblin created for the original, so he decided to go in a new direction.

“There was no point, other than what I found interesting was they used repetition of motifs, again and again and again. Part of your mind was saying, ‘Please, I don’t want to hear this anymore.’ That was really great,” he said in an interview with THR. “There’s a way of repeating in music that can hypnotize. I kept thinking to myself that it’s a form of making spells.”

“So when I was working in my studio I was making spells. I know it sounds really stupid, but that’s how I was thinking about it,” he continued. “It was a sort of freedom I’ve not had before. I’ve not worked in the format of song arrangement. I’m just exploring.”

The “Suspiria” soundtrack drops on October 26. Until then, take a listen to the track below.
