Thomasin McKenzie And Matt Smith Join Edgar Wright’s ‘Last Night In Soho’

Oscar voters may have overlooked Thomasin McKenzie and her breakout performance in last year’s “Leave No Trace,” but at least some of the right people were paying attention. Director Edgar Wright has cast her in his upcoming film “Last Night in Soho,” as well as “The Crown” actor Matt Smith.

The new two cast members will star alongside “Split” and “Glass” actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who was previously announced. With no plot description shared, there aren’t too many details available about the movie beyond these three actors and that it’s a psychological thriller that will take place in London. Wright wrote the script with “Penny Dreadful” writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The producer are Nira Park, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Wright. The “Baby Driver” director is also currently working on a musical documentary about Sparks.

While Thomasin McKenzie sadly didn’t garner Academy Award attention for “Leave No Trace,” she did get notice and nominations from a number of groups, including the Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards and National Board of Review for her role in the quiet, affecting film. Though “Last Night in Soho” is likely for 2020, she should have a big 2019 with Taika Waititi‘s “Jojo Rabbit,” David Michôd‘s “The King,” Liz Garbus‘ “Lost Girls” and Justin Kurzel‘s “The True History of the Kelly Gang.” Smith continues to go beyond “Doctor Who” with upcoming films including  Gavin Hood‘s “Official Secrets” and the title roles in “Mapplethorpe” and “Charlie Says,” where he plays Charles Manson for director Mary Harron.

Focus Features and Universal Pictures International are the film’s distributors, but no release date or production start have been officially announced for the film.
