Got a Tip?

‘Thor: The Dark World’ Director Is Ready For His Snyder Cut Moment But Knows It’s Not Going To Happen

When you talk to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and you ask them to name the worst film in the 25 that have been released, the second “Thor” film, ‘The Dark World,’ is always going to be in the conversation. And the filmmaker behind that feature understands that there are problems with the film and would love to have a Snyder Cut-esque second chance if Marvel Studios wants to give him millions of dollars to see his original vision through.

According to an interview with Inverse, Alan Taylor, the filmmaker behind “Thor: The Dark World” and the upcoming “The Many Saints of Newark,” talked about what went wrong with his Marvel Studios film, which many consider the weakest of the MCU film franchise. Ultimately, the filmmaker said that the editing process changed his vision of the film from a “Game of Thrones”-style film to something much different.

“I focused all my attention on making a certain movie, and then in the editing process, decisions were made to change it a lot,” Taylor said. “My regret was that the movie that got released was changed quite a bit. I have a great fondness for some of the things that went away in the original cut. There was a kind of quality a wonder to the thing that was beautiful to me.”

So, with this year’s Snyder Cut of “Justice League” getting a ton of publicity, where WarnerMedia reportedly gave Zack Snyder upwards of $70 million to finish his original version of “Justice League” and turn it into a four-hour film, Taylor was asked if he’d be willing to venture back to the MCU to give his ‘Dark World’ the same treatment. He would do it but doesn’t think it’s ever going to happen. (Obviously.)

“I was cheering for Zack Snyder when he was doing that and thinking, Will he pull this off? This is amazing,” Taylor said. “I think every director was kind of rooting for that. I would love to, I mean to. Can you imagine that? They give me however many millions of dollars they gave him to go back in. Yeah, I don’t think I’m going to get that phone call.”

Marvel Studios is currently wrapping up the fourth ‘Thor’ film, ‘Love and Thunder,’ which is expected to be released in 2022. There’s absolutely no way Kevin Feige and the folks at the studio are willing to relitigate the past and put millions into a version of ‘Dark World’ that would probably still not be as good as half of the MCU features. But hey, it’s a fun thought and it’s great to see that Taylor has a sense of humor about the whole situation, which was a pretty dark time (no pun intended) in his career.

“Thor: The Dark World,” along with most of the MCU films are now available on Disney+.
