After a hybrid edition in 2021, the Toronto International Film Festival is back in full force for 2022. The long-running Canadian festival announced a majority of its upcoming lineup with new films from Sebastián Lelio, Sam Mendes, Sarah Polley, and Darren Aronofsky among others, set to screen. And, as always, the distributors behind these films will be hoping to strike crowd-pleasing gold with the festival’s People’s Choice Award.
On Wednesday, TIFF revealed that Sally El Hosaini’s “The Swimmer” will open the festival on Thursday, Sept. 8. Other previously announced world premieres include Steven Spielberg’s “The Fablemans,” Rian Jonson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman” with Harry Styles, Clement Virgo’s “Brother,” “Bros” written and starring Billy Eichner, Sanaa Lathan’s “On The Come Up,” and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” with Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu.
Notable premieres include Tyler Perry’s “A Jazzman’s Blues,” Peter Farrelly’s follow-up to Best Picture winner “Green Book,” “The Greatest Beer Run Ever Made,” with Zac Efron, Russell Crowe, and Bill Murray, Paul Weitz’s “Moving On” with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Catherine Hardwicke’s “Prisoner’s Daughter” with Kate Beckinsale and Brian Cox, Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse” with Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, Stephen Frears’ “The Lost King” with Sally Hawkins, Lila Neugebauer’s “Causeway” with Jennifer Lawrence and Lena Dunham’s “Catherine Called Birdy” with Andrew Scott.
