Timothée Chalamet To Star In Josh Safdie’s Ping-Pong Movie ‘Marty Supreme’

This one has been floating out there in rumor-ville for some time, but it looks like it’s true. Filmmaker Josh Safdie’s next movie will be a film about professional ping pong player Marty Reisman and taking the leading role will be Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”).

The film, titled, “Marty Supreme” was written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, both of whom will be producers alongside Chalamet, Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas. A24, who has released most of the recent Safdie Brothers films will distribute.

A24 confirmed the story via their Twitter feed, writing, “Josh Safdie’s MARTY SUPREME starring @RealChalamet. Coming soon.”

Reitman, who died in 2012, was a professional ping-pong player who started at the age of 12, but also a hustler in 1940s New York, playing for bets and prizes. Reisman won 22 major table tennis titles from 1946 to 2002, including two United States Opens and a British Open. Reisman’s was also an author and his autobiography, “The Money Player, The Confessions of America’s Greatest Table Tennis Player” and the book “Hustler” were published in 1974.

Josh Safdie is known for the films, “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” directed alongside his brother Benny, otherwise known as The Safdie brothers. But the duo have since parted ways amicably to try out there own projects following the Adam Sandler baseball card memorabilia film which fell apart and was put on “pause.”

Benny Safdie has since co-created the Showtime series, “The Curse,” with comedian Nathan Fielder and has already shot his new wrestling movie, The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson. “Marty Supreme” will be Josh Safdie’s first directorial effort since 2019’s “Uncut Gems,” though he has directed some things since, including a recent Adam Sandler comedy special for Netflix.
