For years now, we’ve been awaiting word on when we might see the next “Tintin” film from director Steven Spielberg. Every occasion, we’ll hear an update from the filmmaker or producer Peter Jackson about how they’re still working on it and they hope that it will get done soon. Alas, it’s been almost a decade and we’ve had nothing. Well, it appears that might be changing, as a new ‘Tintin’ film is in the works. However, this isn’t a continuation of the motion-capture animated feature from Spielberg. This is something else entirely.

According to the French outlet, Figaro, director Patrice Leconte is hoping to step behind the camera for a live-action ‘Tintin’ film sometime soon. He revealed that the film will be based on the story, “The Castafiore Emerald” and is already pretty far along in the developmental process. However, before a live-action film can be made, Leconte will have to finish production on this forthcoming feature, “Maigret and the Dead Girl,” which is set to begin sometime in early 2021. And not only that, there’s a bit of a rights issue that needs to get worked out between Paramount France and the people in control of ‘Tintin.’
That being said, Leconte is excited to move ahead and hinted that he has already found his Castafiore and Haddock, but has not yet secured his Tintin. For those not familiar with the franchise, ‘Tintin’ tells the story of the title character, a young reporter who teams up with his friend Captain Haddock and his dog to go on adventures and solve mysteries. In “The Castafiore Emerald,” Tintin and his compatriots have to figure out what happened when an emerald is stolen from an opera singer.

Leconte is a big name in French cinema. His previous films include the award-winning works such as “Ridicule,” “The Man on the Train,” “Girl on the Bridge,” and “Monsieur Hire.” His most recent feature is the 2014 film, “Do Not Disturb.”
Again, it’s unclear how this ‘Tintin’ news might affect the Spielberg/Jackson franchise. But for those fans hoping to see more ‘Tintin’ films, no matter the style, this is good news.
