For a little while now, Tom Hardy has been attached to play “Capone” in the film set to be directed by David Yates. Plans were fairly ambitious, with talk of a trilogy at one time, but with the director now busy on “Tarzan” (sigh) it looks a long way off. But Hardy will get to scratch his gangster itch twice over.
The actor is in talks to play twin gangsters in the (tentatively titled) “Legend,” set to be directed by “L.A. Confidential” writer Brian Helgeland. Excited yet? The film will be based on the true story of Ronald and Reginald Kray, sibling toughs from the 1950s and 1960s who rubbed shoulders with celebrities while also taking part in murder, armed robbery, arson, racketeering, assault, and more. Basically, you didn’t want to end up on the bad side of these guys. Rival thugs, politicians and cops sworn to bring them down will all factor into the script, which sounds about right coming from Helgeland.
If this all seems vaguely familiar, perhaps you saw the 1990 feature “The Krays” starring Martin and Gary Kemp from Spandau Ballet. Or more likely, you didn’t. But this one is moving fast with production aiming to take place in the U.K. later this year. [ScreenDaily]
