Of all the surprises in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” perhaps the most underappreciated one is bringing back Charlie Cox to play Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in a quick scene towards the beginning of the film. While Cox, who famously starred as that character in Netflix’s “Daredevil” series, doesn’t suit up, he does have a memorable appearance, and it’s nice to see Marvel Studios bring back the fan-favorite actor and introduce him to the film audience. And according to ‘Spider-Man’ star, Tom Holland, he hopes to have more scenes with Cox in the future.
Speaking to THR about his new film “Uncharted,” as well as the runaway success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tom Holland talked about the surprise cameo of Charlie Cox and what it was like working with the “Daredevil” actor, even if it was only for a limited time.
“Working with Charlie was incredibly exciting. I was a big fan of the ‘Daredevil’ series, and I think he’s a fantastic actor,” said Holland. “He’s done a wonderful job with that character, and albeit it was a small cameo, it obviously teased the future of what could be. It was a real actors’ piece, that scene.”
He continued, “We blocked the scene, which was essentially us just sitting there, and we read the lines. It was great. It felt like an actors’ workshop while working with people I really look up to, and Charlie was a lot of fun. It was really cool to see him snap back into a character that I am really a fan of and that he has a lot of love for, obviously. So it was pretty awesome, and I hope that one day we find a way for Spider-Man and Daredevil to team up again.”
In the comics, there have been dozens of instances where Spider-Man and Daredevil have teamed up. Both characters, though very different in their motivations and powers, are similar in that they are “neighborhood” heroes. Spider-Man is all about Queens, while Daredevil loves Hell’s Kitchen. Both are also what fans call “street-level” characters and hardly interact with threats of a cosmic nature.
All that to say, Marvel Studios should definitely consider having Cox and Holland team up in the future. It is obviously something that works in ‘No Way Home’ and could lead to some fun crossovers in future films/TV series if that’s what Marvel Studios and Sony hope to do.
In the meantime, you just get that quick 2-minute scene in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to whet your appetite.
