Tom Holland is one of the most popular young actors in the world right now. A large part of that popularity comes from his performance as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in various Marvel films. It’s not wrong to say that he is beloved in that role. However, when reviews started popping up for his new Apple TV+ series, “The Crowded Room,” critics weren’t nearly as complimentary as they typically are for his ‘Spider-Man‘ films. And apparently, that revelation hit the young actor really hard.
Speaking to THR, Tom Holland talked about the negative reviews he read about “The Crowded Room,” and he was taken aback by just how critical people were about his dramatic series. “The Crowded Room” follows the story of a man who recounts the terrible things that happened in his life that led to him being arrested for a shooting in 1979. Holland plays the lead in a project he claimed is the “hardest thing” he’s ever done in his career, and while many critics applauded his performance, the show has a terrible 31% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“It was a kick in the teeth,” Holland said about reading the reviews. “Rolling over, looking up the reviews, and then all of a sudden I was like, ‘Wow. That’s a bad review.’ Sometimes there’s a redeeming quality in there. There was nothing.”
He isn’t totally upset by the reviews, however, and he is trying to at least put a positive spin on what the critics are saying.
“There will be good ones. There will be,” he added. “I try to have a healthy outlook on all that sort of stuff and respect everyone’s opinion.”
Obviously, every actor goes through a time when they receive bad reviews for a project. No one is immune to that sort of thing. But, clearly, Holland is still relatively new to the industry and is confronting a rather new problem he’s encountering. Maybe, he just needs to do a new ‘Spider-Man’ film and earn back a bit of that confidence.
“The Crowded Room” is available now on Apple TV+.
