‘Friendship’ Trailer: Tim Robinson & Paul Rudd Lead An Absurdist Nightmare Comedy For A24

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd are going on a male-bonding odyssey with “Friendship” as the new film from writer/director Andrew DeYoung (“Would It Kill You To Laugh?”) and released by A24 Films see the comedic pair sparking a friendship in the nightmare comedy coming to theaters this May with a U.S. debut on March 9.

A new trailer for the pic has been released by A24 (see below), and it certainly wants us to believe this quirky thriller is about to turn into a horror comedy. An absurdist tone that seems to mirror “I Think You Should Leave” and other Robinson projects.

Rounding out the cast is Kate Mara (“House of Cards”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Shazam!,” “Luca”), Josh Segarra (“She-Hulk,” “Abbott Elementary”), Jon Glaser, and Robinson’s comedic pal Conner O’Malley (“I Think You Should Leave,” “Detroiters”).

A24’s official synopsis for the comedy reads:

“Suburban dad Craig (Robinson) falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, as Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.”

DeYoung has an extensive background in comedy, having directed episodes of “Dave,” “A.P. Bio,” “Mixed-ish,” “Miracle Workers,” “PEN15,” “I Love That For You,” and “Our Flag Means Death.”

With a cast and director known for their comedic chops, it sets up a perfect scenario for the absurdity on display in this footage. The film’s tagline is “Men Shouldn’t Have Friends,” and the comedic way of pivoting to a spiraling thriller littered with stunted grown men is quite the creative move here and feels like it could become quite the crowd-pleaser for comedy fans.
