Can’t say this appeals to us much, but it seems more aimed at the ComicCon crowd and children (same thing? And hence the reason it was released today). The synopsis for this one calls Tim Burton as “visionary” and, sure, we suppose (after all he has created an idiosyncratic style for himself — emo goth Halloween all the time?) we agree with that though number of genuinely great films he’s directed? For The Playlist ed. it’s only three, “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “Ed Wood,” all the rest range from decent (“Beetlejuice”) to poor (“Mars Attacks!,” “Planet of the Apes”). We’re generally not huge fans [ed. though I will say ‘Pee-Wee’s’ is utter genius and one of my all-time favorites].
Also it appears that they’ve beefed up the Mad Hatter role for Johnny Depp here. If he weren’t in this thing, we’re not sure it would be of any interest (though nice to see a quick shot of Crispin Glover). Readers probably think different, we’re sure.
From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.
“Alice In Wonderland” hits March 5, 2010. Hopefully it makes a star out of Alice, Mia Wasikowska, cause she seems like a pretty good actress on the rise.
