**Spoiler Alert – This discusses the end of “Transformers: Rise of the Beats.” You’ve been warned.**
For folks who saw “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” over the weekend, they were likely surprised by the very end of the film, which saw a MCU-style crossover moment between two massive franchises. And according to the filmmakers involved with ‘Rise of the Beasts,’ this isn’t just a throwaway moment. The end of the film, and what is teased in it, definitely points to the immediate future of the “Transformers” franchise.
At the very end of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” we see our human hero, Noah (Anthony Ramos), get invited to a seemingly normal job interview. While there, he meets a man named Burke (Michael Kelly), who explains that he knows Noah has been saving the world with his big robot friends, and Burke thinks Noah would fit right in with a secret government agency that he is working for. He then passes him a business card with G.I. Joe on it. Dun, dun, dunnnnnnnn. That’s right, the “G.I. Joe” franchise is officially linked with “Transformers.” But what does it mean?
In an interview with Uproxx, ‘Rise of the Beasts’ filmmaker Steven Caple, Jr. said that the end means exactly what you think it does—the G.I. Joe characters are now fully integrated alongside the Transformers. And yes, this means the “G.I. Joe” franchise is getting a full-on reboot.
“Yes. 100 percent. That is my plan for sure,” said the filmmaker about this being a reboot.
As for what the future holds, Caple Jr. confirms that he is definitely sticking with the “Transformers” franchise, and if anything, this is more of “G.I. Joe” characters joining “Transformers” than it is setting up two separate film universes.
“I think that’s one we have to wait on,” said the filmmaker about new “G.I. Joe” films. “But I’m always ‘Transformers.’ I want to say always ‘Transformers.’ But, I mean, between you and I, I know you’ll read this later, but when you look at it, there is a ‘Transformer,’ ‘G.I. Joe’ collaboration in the comic books. And I read it years ago and I thought this idea would always been cool. So I’m not going to say I’m staying true to that storyline, but the fact that it was more so ‘G.I. Joe’ stepping into their world was interesting to me.”
In a separate interview with EW, “Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura also echoed that sentiment, explaining that this is more about bringing in a select few “G.I. Joe” characters for the next ‘Transformers’ film than it is a set up for brand-new ‘Joe’ films.
“We’re introducing ‘Joe’ characters into the world that we’re dealing with, on whatever our characters are gonna go do,” he said. “We’re also not through with the Maximals, so I imagine in the next movie we’ll have Maximals, Autobots, and Joes.”
He added, “The idea of trying to do the whole ‘Joe’ world at the same time is a little daunting. This is a way to bring them into our world, remind people of who they are, and they’ll have a role in the plot.”
So, if you’re concerned about what’s next for the “G.I. Joe” film franchise, it appears the IP is firmly linked with “Transformers” for now. And it would appear that the previous films, including the 2021 “Snake Eyes” solo film, are now no longer canon. As for which ‘Joe’ characters will appear in the next ‘Transformers’ film, that remains to be seen.
“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” is in theaters now.
