The million dollar question: will Terrence Malick’s “Tree Of Life” appear at this year’s Cannes Film Festival?
Apparition’s acquisition veteran Sara Rose — who also worked with Bob Berney when they were at the now shuttered Picturehouse — has now added to the growing speculation revealing that Malick’s long-gestating pic is “almost certainly headed for Cannes.”
Such comment is probably as close to a confirmation as we’ll get after fellow Apparition head Bill Pohlad noted that the film “is in fact finished” and Berney cryptically revealed a November theatrical release “doesn’t mean it won’t be ready for Cannes.”
At this point, it sounds at least like everything is in place for a Croisette premiere, with the decision now seemingly hanging on a final word of approval from Malick himself. There’s certainly no doubt surrounding whether a Malick film starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn would be accepted into the festival or not. That being said, there is some word circulating, that the film won’t be an official selection, but would instead premiere in the Director’s Fortnight section of the festival.
There’s also no word on what this means for “Voyage Of Time,” the companion, IMAX documentary. We would imagine that if the director is still planning on shooting his upcoming romance drama with Christian Bale, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko this fall, ‘Time’ must be in the can as well.
