Wonder what happened to the long-in-the-works “Tron: Ares,” the next chapter in the “Tron” franchise (and maybe a sequel to “Tron: Legacy”? That’s unclear), especially as the film was delayed last year due to the strikes? Well, good news on that front: it went into production in January in Vancouver and is scheduled for a 2025 release, and today, Disney released a first look at the film.
Jared Leto leads a big cast, seemingly all of whom were originally reported, none dropping out due to the strikes, including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

Joachim Rønnin, known for directing “Kon-Tiki” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” is directing “TRON: Ares.” “I’m excited to be part of the ‘TRON’ franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world,” he said in a statement. “‘TRON: Ares’ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology, and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
“Tron: Ares” follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
No word on a release date frame yet, but we’ll have to assume summer 2025, and if one takes a closer look at what TBD dates, Disney has set for next year, August 8, 2025, is currently unscheduled and save for a mystery film. If all goes well production scheduling wise, don’t be surprised if Disney throws the film in that slot. In the meantime, take a first look below.
