Got a Tip?

‘Tron: Legacy’ Director Joseph Konsinski Eyes ‘Oblivion’ For Next Film (Unless ‘Tron: Legacy 2’ Happens)

“Tron: Legacy” walked way from Comic-Con this weekend with arguably the best buzz of any of the films hitting the fest. The extended footage made believers out of everyone who saw it, as did the latest trailer which hit the web shortly thereafter.

Well, it looks like director Joseph Kosinski is looking to trade in on that goodwill, to try and get his next project off the ground, an adaptation of “Oblivion,” a graphic novel he created. The project is one that is close to Kosinski’s heart; he had thought of it three years ago, before his name earned the buzz it has now, and was set up for a graphic novel first (it will be published by Random House later this year).

The ambitious project, to be penned by Arvid Nelson, “takes place in an apocalyptic future where most people live above the clouds because the surface of the Earth is uninhabitable. A soldier is stuck on the desolate Earth repairing drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien race called The Scavengers. He comes across a beautiful woman who has crashed in a craft. Together they take an epic adventure that changes his world view.” Sounds right in the visually adventurous wheelhouse Kosinski seems to be crafting for himself. Disney has been offered the project first, but even if they pass, it’s expected to get picked up.

When this might get in front of cameras depends on when Nelson turns in a script, but also, if “Tron: Legacy” will spawn a sequel. At this point, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion the film will be a huge hit. Disney probably just wants to see if the film will gain traction outside the geek set before giving the thumbs up to get “Tron: Legacy 2.0 Upgrade” into production. [Deadline]
