For years now, it’s become apparent that the creative freedom and risk-taking that studios used to do more often in mid-budget films is now being done on the small screen, with platforms like HBO, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc… So, we’re beginning to see filmmakers like Alex Garland, Bong Joon-ho, Adam McKay, and others take real big risks with TV series regularly. With that in mind, it makes complete sense that A24 and Silver Reel are in the middle of a bidding war for the TV rights to Jonathan Glazer’s film, “Under the Skin.”

According to Deadline, A24 and Silver Reel are bidding for the TV rights to the sci-fi film “Under the Skin,” hoping that the film can turn into yet another quality prestige drama series. Glazer’s 2013 film starred Scarlett Johansson and followed her alien character as she hunts men in Scotland. The series is being described as a spin-off and obviously won’t star Johansson in the lead, but it’s the exact type of weird, creatively risky show that would fit perfectly on a streaming platform.
The TV rights for “Under the Skin” turned into a hot ticket item thanks to the original production company, Seventh Kingdom Productions, going under and having its assets purchased by other companies. Because of this, the TV rights for “Under the Skin” suddenly became available and Silver Reel and A24 found themselves in a bidding war.

Interestingly, before Seventh Kingdom found itself carving out its assets, Silver Reel had been working with the company to develop a TV series based on the sci-fi film for almost two years. However, over that time, they were never able to fully get the project off the ground. That’s why the company is still involved heavily in making sure it earns the rights for the project.
