Just because “Jurassic World Dominion” earned the lowest box office total of the new ‘World’ trilogy (still at $1 billion, though), you didn’t think we’d be done with the ‘Jurassic’ franchise, did you? Silly reader, of course not! Two years after ‘Dominion’ served as a sort of kind of ending for both ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Jurassic World’ franchises, it appears Universal is full steam ahead on a new ‘Jurassic’ adventure.

According to THR, David Koepp, the original writer of “Jurassic Park” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” (as well as the iconic “Premium Rush”), is attached to write a new adventure in the dinosaur saga. The film, which is currently untitled, is reportedly not attached to either the ‘Park’ or ‘World’ trilogies and will serve as a new beginning for the franchise. What does that mean? Well, don’t expect Chris Pratt or Jeff Goldblum or any of those cast members in this one, folks. But hey, maybe we get the dino/human hybrids or raptors with lasers? Or maybe let’s really go there and cross over with ‘Fast & Furious?’ Please?!
Perhaps the most shocking aspect of this announcement is the news that the script seems to be largely done, and the studio is looking to get this one in production soon, with a possible 2025 release date being thrown around. That means one of two things—either they’ve been working on this for a while, and we’re only just now hearing about it, or Universal is desperate to keep the ‘Jurassic’ train moving along, and the studio is doing whatever it takes to make it happen. Either way, it would appear more dinosaur mayhem is coming sooner than you were expecting.

That said, the real question a lot of people might have after hearing this news is, “Why?” There’s an obvious answer to this that has to do with franchises and studios loving the idea of making money, but honestly, from a creative standpoint, there really doesn’t seem like much of a reason. Unless Koepp and the studio have a killer idea, we’re officially in the era where we can say ‘Jurassic’ is a cynical cash grab, right? Like the end result or not, it seemed as if Colin Trevorrow had a vision for the ‘World’ films. And obviously, Steven Spielberg kept the ‘Park’ trilogy going. But why now?
Also, who is going to take over the directing duties? If production is hoping to begin in 2024, you have to assume Universal is figuring out the director question now. The studio might actually already have someone picked. So, keep an eye out for that. Until then, let your imaginations run wild, and let’s figure out where the ‘Jurassic’ franchise is going next.
